Healthy Hip Tips for Seniors

Healthy Hip Tips for Seniors

Did you know that keeping your hips healthy reduces your risk for falls and fractures. As we age it is natural to experience loss of muscle and bone loss, and an increased risk of falls. There is evidence that exercise and stretching can intervene this by increasing balance, strength, and preventing falls in seniors.

As we age the amount of synovial fluid in our joints decreases. This is the lubricating fluid that helps the joints move more smoothly. This is part of the reason our hips become more tight as we age. Synovial fluid is something that we have in all of our joints. However, it is extremely important to keep hip joints lubricated. Here are 5 ways to keep your joints limber and lubricated.

  1. Maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise.
  2. Do low impact exercises and stretches.
  3. Be mindful of your posture.
  4. Be kind to your body and know your limitations.
  5. Find a gentle yoga class such asĀ  yin, or restorative yoga.

Always remember that your body is something that needs to be actively maintained in order to stay in good shape. Make sure consult a physician before starting any new fitness activities or dietary changes.
